Jogo do Bicho was created in 1892 by João Batista Viana Drummond, the owner of the Rio de Janeiro Zoo, as a way to attract visitors. He devised a simple betting game where customers could place a wager on one of 25 different animals, each associated with a number. The zoo’s ticket sales increased dramatically, and soon, the game spread beyond its original purpose, evolving into a major underground gambling system.
