India Ceramic Sanitaryware History and Evolution

The ceramic sanitaryware industry in India has evolved significantly over the past few decades. In the early years after independence, most Indian households did not have basic sanitation facilities. Gradually, the government recognized sanitation as a key priority and launched various programs to improve access. One of the early manufacturers was Hindustan Sanitaryware which was established in 1960. They helped drive awareness and uptake of ceramic products. Through the 1970s and 1980s, several other major players like Parryware and Cera established themselves. This fueled steady but slow growth in the market.

Modernization and Expansion in the Late 20th Century

It was in the late 20th century that the India Ceramic Sanitaryware truly began to modernize and expand at a much faster pace. Several factors contributed to this. Economic liberalization in the early 1990s opened up the sector to foreign investments and technology transfers. Major global brands like Kohler and Grohe set up manufacturing bases in India. This raised quality standards and introduced new design aesthetics.

Growing urbanization and rising incomes also increased demand steadily for branded bath products. The government-led Total Sanitation Campaign post 2000 further accelerated rural sanitation coverage. All these combined to nearly double the size of the domestic market every 5-7 years over the next two decades.
