Hybrid Transactional/Analytical Processing (HTAP) is a term coined by information technology research and advisory firm Gartner Inc. in its early 2014 research report, "The Opportunity for Hybrid Transactional/Analytical Processing to Accelerate Significant Business Innovation." [1] According to Gartner's definition:
Hybrid Transactional/Analytical Processing (HTAP) is an emerging application architecture that "breaks down" the barriers between transactional and analytical processing. It supports smarter "real-time business" decisions. [2][1]
In a recent report, Gartner began referring to HTAP as "enhanced transactions." [3] Another analyst firm, Forrester Research, calls the same concept "Translytical"[4], while the 451 Group calls it "Hybrid Operational and Analytical Processing," or HOAP.
HTAP Advantages and Challenges
HTAP has multiple interpretations beyond Gartner's original definition; an "emerging architecture". These explanations indicate different strengths, one of which is database functionality. Recent advances in research, hardware, OLTP and OLAP capabilities, in-memory and cloud-native database technologies,[8] scalable transaction management, and products enable transaction processing and analytics (HTAP) to run on the same database.
