Cyberattacks are rapidly becoming a serious threat to the dental industry. From small private practices to large dental organizations, no one is immune. Ransomware, data breaches, and system shutdowns are disrupting care, exposing patient data, and causing significant financial and reputational harm.
Recent incidents highlight the urgency. Dental Care Alliance's 2020 breach affected over one million patients. In 2023, Henry Schein—a major dental supplier—was hit by a ransomware group, impacting over 160,000 individuals and crippling parts of the dental supply chain. Even national organizations like the American Dental Association have been targeted.
Many dental practices remain vulnerable due to outdated systems, weak passwords, lack of staff training, and the absence of multi-factor authentication. These oversights create easy entry points for cybercriminals.

What Your IT Provider Might Not Understand About Your Practice By Thomas Kane, CEO at Fusion One Technologies
Thomas Kane, CEO of Fusion One Technologies, explores the critical gaps that often exist between general IT providers and the real-world needs of healthcare practices. He argues that while many IT firms offer technical support, few truly grasp the specialized demands of medical and dental environments. These include navigating HIPAA compliance, integrating with practice management systems and electronic health records (EHRs), and understanding the urgency and precision required in patient care workflows.
Kane emphasizes that healthcare providers cannot afford downtime, miscommunications, or data breaches. Unfortunately, IT providers without healthcare experience may underestimate the operational impact of seemingly minor technical issues. They might also lack awareness of clinical software nuances or how even slight disruptions can delay patient care and billing processes.

Why Dental and Medical Practices Need a Great IT Partner — And What That Looks Like | ##thomaskane # #fusiononetechnologiesthomaskane # #thomaskaneceo
When I was 35, I climbed Mount Hood in Oregon all by myself in sandals and summited it. On my way back down, the mountain opened and swallowed me. I fell through the glacier into a crevasse 40 feet down. It took me 4 hours to crawl out inch by inch with no harness in complete darkness.
While I was freezing to death, I thought about quitting approximately 10,000 times. (And that’s a lowball estimate.) But despite the extremely cold temperatures, bleak outlook, no cell phone signal, mental and physical fatigue, and Kind Bars overdose, I kept going. I’m that person. Once I say I’ll do something, and or tell you what to expect, it will happen.
Now, I put that perseverance, grit, and die-hard dedication to work each and every day. I don’t have to climb any mountains…but I do have to move them for our customers and team members every day.
