A Brief History of ASEAN Flexible Packaging

Flexible packaging has come a long way since it was first introduced in the late 19th century. One of the earliest forms of flexible packaging was celluloid, which was used to package goods like soap and cigarettes in the 1870s. In the following decades, materials like cellophane, polyethylene, and polypropylene were developed and started being used in flexible film and bag packaging applications. The 1950s saw many innovations in packaging machinery that made flexible packaging much more viable commercially. By the 1960s, flexible packaging had emerged as a major segment of the packaging industry due to advantages like low material and manufacturing costs.

Rise of Flexible Packaging in the ASEAN Flexible Packaging

The ASEAN Flexible Packaging  saw significant economic growth starting in the 1990s, which drove demand for consumer goods and food products. This correspondingly increased the need for effective and affordable packaging solutions. Flexible packaging was well-suited to meet this need due to various advantages. Being lightweight and versatile allowed flexible packaging to be transported and stored efficiently.

Materials like plastic films also provided good protection against environmental factors like moisture. Flexible pouches and bags took up less space compared to rigid containers as well. All of these factors contributed to flexible packaging gaining widespread usage across various industries in ASEAN countries.
