Scalpel

This is an instrument that is used for making an incision and cutting tissue. It has a blade and a handle. This tool is used by the surgeons and uses different blade numbers to use different scalpels.

· 10-grade blade is used primarily for making big skin incisions such as in the cases of laparotomy.

· 11 grade blade is used for making accurate and sharp-angled skin incisions.

· 15 grade blade is a very small version of a 10 grade blade. It is used for making fine skin incisions.

Scissors

The scissors in the hospitals are very different from the ones we use in the home. The scissors used in the OT are for cutting tissue and suture or dissection. Scissors can be straight or curved which are used for cutting heavy structures.

The types of scissors are:

Mayo Scissors: These are heavy scissors that are found in different types. Straight scissors are used for cutting sutures and hence are also called suture scissors and curved scissors are used for cutting heavy tissue such as fascia.

Metzenbaum Scissors or Metz: These are the lighter scissors that can cut delicate tissue such as the heart and creates blunt dissection.

Pott’s Scissors: These are the fine scissors that are used for making incisions in the blood vessels.

Iris Scissors: These types of scissors also create fine dissection and cutting sutures. It was primarily used in the cases of ophthalmic surgeries, but now it has a multipurpose role to play.

Forceps

You would have heard about this one, isn’t it? It is also known as nonlocking forceps or grasping forceps or thumb forceps or pick-ups. They are used for holding tissue or some objects. The forceps be toothed or serrated or nontoothed at the tip.

· Tissue forceps: These non-toothed forceps are used for finely holding the tissue.

· Adson Forceps: These Forceps are toothed at the tip and can handle dense tissue-like skin closures.

· Bonney Forceps: These are heavy forceps that are used for carrying thick tissue like in the fascial closure.

· DeBakey: Basically, it is used for atraumatic tissue during dissection.

· Russian Forceps: it is also used for atraumatic tissue during dissection.

Clamps

These are locking forceps which are ratcheted Veterinary instrument that are used to hold tissue and objects. It can be traumatic or atraumatic.

Retractors

The retractors are used to hold an incision and tissues along with other objects to ensure a clear Surgical equipment for sale field.
