Types of Asphalt Additives
There are several different types of additives that can be mixed with asphalt to enhance its properties for various paving applications. The most common additive types include:
- Anti-stripping agents: These additives help reduce the stripping of additives from aggregate in the presence of water. Stripping occurs when the bond between the asphalt and aggregate is broken down by water, allowing them to separate. Anti-stripping agents work by improving adhesion.
- Modifiers: Polymer and rubber modifiers are added to Asphalt Additives to improve flexibility and cracking resistance at low temperatures. They also increase durability and extend the service life of asphalt pavements. Common modifiers include styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), and ground tire rubber (GTR).
